Class Description

In this workshop students will learn how to create beads and do coining using the hydraulic press (Bonny Doon).

Coining is a form of precision stamping in which a workpiece is subjected to high stress to induce plastic flow in the metal, producing fine levels of detail. Bonny Doon coining dies will be used to make pendants with a stone and beads. The hydraulic press does the hard moving and forming of the metal for patterns that have high relief.

Students will learn how to solder beads together without major solder clean up. Students will also learn how to tube set stones. Students will make samples, a pendant and bead.

About the instructor: Chapin Dimond is a full-time professional metalsmith and

jeweler. In 2003 he discovered the magic of metalsmithing. From Metropolitan State

College of Denver, he earned a BFA in Art: Jewelry Design and Metalsmithing.

Chapin is a Colorado native inspired by nature and the magic of metals.

Metalsmithing is the process of telling stories through metal, releasing the inner “feeling” of what metal wants to be.
