Techniques covered include piercing with a jewelers saw, creating “mirror image” earring designs, sweat soldering, a simple method of gold application, creating matching ear wires, patina, refining and finish work.

Instructor will have the following for use in class

Flex shaft and finishing bits although most of our finishing will be done by hand

Torches and soldering stations

Crockpot, copper tongs, pickle and clean up station

Solder and flux

bench grinder/polisher and wheel

a few of my favorite metal stamps for embellishing the earrings

Student Supply List

Small solderite board and chunk of kiln brick to carry project to stations and as soldering surface. I like having both

jewelers saw and blades (2/0 -4/0)

blade wax or lubricant

bench pin and 3” or 4” C-clamp to secure bench pin (tables vary in thickness)

center punch and hammer

files (one large straight file)

needle files

steel bench block and leather to deaden noise

chain nose pliers, 2 pairs

flat pliers

flush wire cutters

Soldering pick (I will be recommending my favorite titanium pick if you plan to work on your pick soldering!)

tweezers

old jewelry pliers for soldering

I highly recommend a separate soldering pick for the gold!

Brass brush for cleaning and burnishing

steel burnisher for the gold

very fine sharpie, pencil, notepad

Because this is not a dedicated jewelry/metals studio, we ask you to bring a lot of tools. Some people will be willing to share, but don’t rely on that if there are certain tools you usually work with.
