About this class

Create a bold, dramatic setting that’s as fierce as it is elegant!

In this class, you’ll learn how to fabricate talon-shaped claws—long, tapered prongs that securely hold a faceted gemstone while adding a striking sculptural edge to your design.

Explore the balance between strength and beauty as you shape and refine your setting for maximum impact and durability.

This technique is perfect for showcasing larger stones or adding a powerful design element to your work.

Leave with a completed ring that makes a strong, sophisticated statement.

What to bring

Your own tools and materials for the class.

  • Students must bring faceted or cabochon gemstone to set or purchase in class
  • Students are required to bring their own sterling silver or jewelry grade bronze. Metal and gemstones will also be available for purchase in class.
  • Work light (preferably battery-operated)
  • Magnification
  • Your own favorite tools
  • Face/dust mask
  • Safety glasses

Safety and preparation

Before class
Coming from Canada, I drop ship a pallet of my personal studio equipment. Quite a cost to do this; however, it is to my student’s advantage to have access to everything needed to complete this project. Because I want my students to have personalized attention in my classroom, I hire professional assistants who are amazing, qualified, and capable metalsmiths. My goal is to maintain a ratio of 4-5 students per instructor/assistant.
