KIRIHAME ZOGAN
an inlay technique
“marriage of metals”
“openwork inlay”
this ancient Japanese technique is composed of a pierced work inlay in which parts of the ground are pierced through completely and replaced with parts having exactly the same shape, but of another metal, then soldered in place. If done carefully, the same pattern will appear on both sides of the sheet. The inserted inlay can be flat or in repousse work relief.
In this class students will learn to create beautiful pieces of sheet metal combining different metals using this technique known as marriage of metals.
Married metal techniques covered will include solder inlay and puzzle inlay.
These techniques give the metal the appearance of being a single piece composed of 2 or more different types of metal.
Stamping, embossing, and piercing will also be covered.
The married metal pieces will be used to create beautiful married metal earrings.
