Alex Boyd | Gold Overlay Carved Ring | Monday, February 5, 2024 | 9:00 am until 4:30 pm
$205.00
In this class students will learn how to make a sterling silver ring with a thin layer of 22k gold over it.
I will teach how to lay out patterns around a ring so the finished pattern will be consistent and even over the whole circumference.
We will then carve the patterns through the gold using needle files.
Once the pattern is achieved the rings will be oxidized with liver of sulfur to expose the contrast between silver and gold.
Students will have the opportunity to make as many rings as time and their budget allow.
I will also bring blank sterling rings to practice carving the patterns to give students a chance to hone their skills before committing to gold.

It looks like this is a very popular class and has sold out!

Student Supply List
Here are all the tools I’ll use for this project with hyperlinks to examples. There are many options available and the links are more to make sure we’re on the same page than a specific endorsement of that product. There are also often work-arounds for missing tools or I can let students borrow mine if necessary. The most crucial tools for success in this project are high quality needle files. I really don’t recommend economy files.
Bench Pin and clamp to hold it to workbench
Fine tipped permanent marker (these are my favorite but Sharpie is fine)
parallel pliers
3m Radial Bristle Discs (optional, but my preferred way to finish pieces)
Painter’s tape
Optional Supply List
Work light and extension cord
Magnification if required
